Armén ska få använda icke-dödliga vapen för att hindra flyktingar att ta sig in i Ungern.
Det ungerska parlamentet godkände på måndagen en lag som innebär att landets armé får använda tårgas, nätpistoler och gummikulor mot flyktingar.
– Flyktingarna knackar inte bara på vår dörr, de river ned den över oss. Våra gränser hotas. Ungern hotas vilket även hela Europa gör, sade den ungerske konservative premiärministern Viktor Orbán i samband med att lagförslaget antogs.
EU-kommissionen ville på tisdagen inte kommentera det ungerska beslutet men den liberala Alde-gruppen i EU-parlamentet, där Folkpartiet och Centerpartiet ingår, vill ta till unionens vassaste verktyg mot landet – den så kallade artikel 7 i EU-fördraget.
– Hur mycket längre får Orbánregeringen gå innan både kommissionen och rådet vaknar? Situationen är utom kontroll, sade den nederländska liberala EU-parlamentariken Sophie in ’t Veld i ett uttalande.
Artikel sju i EU-fördraget innebär att ett medlemslands rösträtt tas bort i ministerrådet. Den har tidigare aldrig använts.
Enligt Ekot kommer dock kommissionen att inleda ett så kallat överträdelseförfarande mot Ungern för dess behandling av flyktingar. Det är första steget mot att dra ett medlemsland inför EU-domstolen.
