När förbundskansler Angela Merkels svåraste motståndare i hösten val Martin Schulz utsågs till de tyska socialdemokraternas ledare fick han alla röster på partikongressen.
Martin Schulz fick 605 av de 605 giltiga rösterna vid söndagens extrainsatta partikongress för socialdemokratiska SPD, rapporterar FAZ. Ett resultat som slår de tidigare populära tyska s-ledarna Willy Brandt och Kurt Schumacher.
– Jag tror att detta resultat är upptakten på erövringen av förbundskansliet, sade Schulz efter omröstningen.
I en intervju med ARD efter omröstning sade sig Schulz vara överraskad över resultatet
Den tidigare EU-parlamentstalmannen Schulz har fungerat som draglok för de tyska socialdemokraterna inför parlamentsvalet 24 september. Under förre partiledaren Sigmar Gabriel stöddes partiet av drygt 20 procent av väljarna. Med Schulz som förbundskanslerkandidat har SPD i vissa opinionsundersökningar till och med gått om Angela Merkels kristdemokrater med drygt 30 procent av stödet.
Tyskland har sedan 2005 letts av förbundskansler Merkel men socialdemokratiska SPD ingår sedan senaste parlamentsvalet 2013 i en bred koalitionsregering med kristdemokraterna.
Schulz har nyligen träffat ledarna för vänsterpartistiska Die Linke och miljöpartiet Die Grüne för att sondera terrängen för en eventuell koalitionsregering, uppger Berliner Zeitung.
Martin Schulz har hittills bland annat drivit frågor som att göra om i landets a-kassa och mot högerpopulism. Men partiets valprogram väntas först i mitten av juni.
Det första testet för Schulz socialdemokrater sker redan på söndag då den västliga delstaten Saarland, ett traditionellt fäste för kristdemokrater, ska välja nytt regionparlament. Valtemperaturen stiger ytterligare 14 maj då Tysklands folkrikaste delstat Nordrhein-Westfalen ska välja sitt parlament.
